The definition of hypnosis is:

The induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction. It is used in therapy, typically to recover suppressed memories or to allow modification of behaviour.

Hypnosis uses different techniques to alter a person’s brainwaves to get them to change their beliefs, feelings and habits. People use it to stop smoking and for many other reasons.

People are induced into theta or delta brain wave, where they can more easily absorb suggestions because they are tapping into the subconscious at those brain waves.

The thing you have to remember is that during the day when we are awake, the brain fluctuates across all the brainwaves, and when we are asleep it also passes through different brainwaves.

It is important to not attach to what brainwave you are in to experience healing or changes. Through simplicity they just happen.
